The state’s water provider said the pipeline is needed for the town because the quality of drinking water in Orroroo is too salty for residents’ liking.

Orroroo residents currently get their drinking water from Walloway Basin in the southern Flinders Ranges, about 350km north of Adelaide.

Project stakeholders should be “commended” for their diligence in finding solutions, Mr. Hunter said in a statement from the South Australian Government.

“The pipeline will deliver a reliable and high-quality water supply to local residents that will improve multiple aspects of day-to-day life, and support future residential and business growth,” he said.

The pipeline will connect to the water network at the neighbouring town of Peterborough, around 44km away.

Once connected, the water for Orroroo will come from Morgan Water Treatment Plant, which experts last year voted had produced the best-tasting water in the state for the second year running, according to the statement from the South Australian Government.

Building of the pipeline, anticipated to create 20 jobs, is expected to start mid-year and finish by the end of the year.
