As part of the Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project, a new shared-use path will be built in Dandenong South to provide pedestrians and cyclists with safer and easier access to local businesses.
An 800-metre new section of shared-use path will be constructed on the eastern side of South Gippsland Highway, between Dandenong Bypass and Hallam Valley Road, linking to the surrounding path network.
The works are part of the Progress Street level crossing removal project, with the crossing permanently closed in June.
As part of the project, a footpath will be built along the south side of Fowler Road to connect to the new road bridge and South Gippsland Highway, delivered in partnership with Greater Dandenong City Council.

Additional project safety upgrades include new street lighting, a reduced 50 kilometre per hour speed limit and indented parking on Fowler Road to increase the driveable width from approximately eight metres to 10 metres.
Crews are now carrying out finishing works and landscaping before the opening of the path, due for mid-2026.
In total, the Victorian Government is removing 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2030 under the Level Crossing Removal Project, one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the state’s history. So far, 87 have been removed.
The project has made Victorian roads safer by preventing 111 crashes and near misses every year and has slashed travel times in the morning by saving 55 hours of boom gate downtime, according to the State Government.
