The preferred section of the Newcastle Future Transit Corridor has been announced by Transport for NSW, linking the Newcastle Interchange at Newcastle West and the Broadmeadow precinct.
The Newcastle Future Transit Corridor will enable infrastructure for future transport options, such as rapid buses or light rail.
Transport for NSW confirmed the decision following extensive investigations and community consultation as part of the Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan (SRITP).
The SRITP draft plan provides a 20-year vision and defines the key transport priorities for the region to support community, land use and transport needs, now and into the future.
Anna Zycki, Regional Director of Transport for NSW said protecting the corridor is vital.
“This is a critical step towards providing for the future transport needs of Newcastle and its growing population,” she said.
“This decision ensures we can plan for the transport needs of growing communities, businesses, and industries – who all rely on different transport modes.”

Zycki said the selection of the route now allows for land use planning and development to proceed with certainty.
“It means that when the time comes for the infrastructure to be built, that can happen more quickly and easily,” she said.
“It also provides the community with certainty for the future, so residents, businesses and other stakeholders can plan their future activities and investment in line with this decision.
“The corridor preservation is part of planning for the projected growth in the Broadmeadow precinct, which is expected to see population growth of up to 40,000 with an estimated 20,000 new homes and 15,000 jobs over the coming decades.”
A section of the Newcastle Future Transit Corridor, near the Newcastle Interchange, will be protected by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI). This section will be referred to as the Newcastle Future Infrastructure Corridor.
