Released on Friday 23 of April, the draft of Wagga Wagga’s Transport Plan is the first proposed plan in regional New South Wales to be developed based on location.

The plan details how the city’s transport network, infrastructure and services will develop over time to meet changing community needs.

This follows the states ‘Future Transport 2056’ report release in 2018 that outlined an overarching transport plan for the next 20 years.

The plan defines key initiatives such as improving the regions road and transport connectivity, freight and logistics abilities and overall road safety.

Cycling and walking initiatives are also in place, including completion of the 45km cycleway network.

The Transport Plan aims to:

  • Develop priority networks for walking, cycling, bus, general vehicle access and through movement of heavy vehicles
  • Prioritise walkways and buses within the Health and Knowledge Precinct and Central Business District
  • Prioritise local access to and from precincts within Wagga Wagga’s urban core
  • Reconfigure Edward Street and Hammond Avenue to focus on movements to and from land uses along the corridor.

The plan creates a timeline for these transport and infrastructure changes and identifies the short-, medium- and long-term steps that the state government, Wagga Wagga city council and community members should expect throughout the plan.

Wes Fang, Member of the Legislative Council said, “We’re constantly looking at ways to improve Wagga Wagga’s public transport offering. Last March the NSW Government announced an extra 240 weekly bus services and in July, Wagga Wagga was the first city in the state to roll out braille wayfinding along an entire bus route to support vision-impaired customers.”

The Wagga Wagga City Council and its stakeholders are now asking for community feedback on the draft plan until 5pm Friday, 28 of May 2021.
