Both lanes of the Great Western Highway through Mount Victoria, in New South Wales, will reopen to traffic in time for the weekend, following the completion of works to repair extensive flood damage to the connection.

The highway pavement has now been repaired near Fairy Bower Road and the slope has been stabilised following a landslip at the start of March due to the flooding.

The highway had previously only remained open with the westbound lane being available under traffic control arrangements. A fallen tree had also affected services as recently as Monday, impacting eastbound traffic at Medlow Bath.

The Great Western Highway is a vital freight and tourist link between Sydney and western NSW, while also being an important local road for locals in the Blue Mountains.

Acting Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said both lanes of the highway through Mount Victoria would be open to traffic from 3am today.

“Crews have been working hard to restore full access and connectivity to the road network through the Blue Mountains and they have done an incredible job to complete this work so quickly,” Toole said.

A 40 km/h speed limit will remain for traffic in both lanes across the weekend. Further significant rain is forecast in the Blue Mountains over the coming days, with motorists being advised that short single lane closures may take place to allow crews to inspect the road.
