The Northern Territory Government has released its NT Infrastructure Strategy 2022 to 2030, as well as the NT Infrastructure Plan and Pipeline 2022 as part of its new Infrastructure Framework.

The Framework, Strategy and Plan and Pipeline have been developed in consultation with Northern Territory and Federal Government agencies, local government, land councils, industry representative bodies and the private sector.

The Strategy outlines the Territory Government’s vision for infrastructure investment, while the Plan and Pipeline provide a detailed roadmap of the projects, programs, and proposals to support that vision.

Key infrastructure projects and programs include the continued investment in strategic road corridors such as Central Arnhem Road and Tanami Road, infrastructure in Central Australia to support the recovery of tourism, the Beetaloo Sub-basin development, and the Darwin Regional Water Supply Program.

The Framework also includes a new two-phase Audit to assess the Territory’s infrastructure needs, analyse gaps, identify opportunities and address challenges, for both the mid-term to 2030 and the longer term to 2050.

Eva Lawler, Minister for Territory Development, said projects that enable economic development were important for the Territory’s comeback.

“The NT Infrastructure Strategy 2022-30 sets the vision for the infrastructure investment that enables growth of the Territory’s economy and population, and supports well-being and quality of life for all Territorians, underpinned by sustainability and resilience,” she said.

“Now is the time for a refocused approach to delivering strategic infrastructure planning and development to accelerate the Territory’s post-COVID 19 economic rebound.”

Louise McCormick, Infrastructure Commissioner, said the new Infrastructure Plan and Pipeline adopts a place-based approach to focus on strengths and opportunities for each region.

“The Plan and Pipeline better equips Government to manage the historical boom and bust cycle, enables industry to undertake workforce planning and provides private sector investors with more certainty about public infrastructure investment,” she said.

Romilly Madew, Chief Executive of Infrastructure Australia, said the Territory Government’s plan and pipeline aligned closely with Infrastructure Australia’s work.

“The NT Framework aligns to our refreshed approach to infrastructure assessment, looking beyond the benefit cost ratio to more holistically consider strategic alignment, societal impact and deliverability,” she said.
