The Morley-Ellenbrook Line project in Perth’s north-east is progressing ahead, with designs now revealed for the second of the five new stations being constructed as part of the project.
The new Malaga station, part of the five stations being delivered on the line, will be a ‘station within a park’. It draws influence from the surrounding parklands in Whiteman Park, Lightning Park and the banksia bushlands.
The design includes intuitive wayfinding and shaded meeting points within an urban landscape setting to create a warm, safe and welcoming environment. The first building in the future town centre, the station features striking architecture and an open ‘veranda’ style entrance.
Perth’s largest public transport project since the Mandurah Line, the 21-kilometre Morley-Ellenbrook Line will be connecting a re-located Bayswater Station on the Midland Line to Ellenbrook, travelling in the centre of Tonkin Highway, through land north of Marshall Road, along the western side of Drumpellier Drive.
The circa $500 million project, being delivered by MELConnx consortium led by Laing O’Rourke Australia and involving British engineering company Arup, includes the construction of the rail line, five new stations at Morley, Noranda, Malaga, Whiteman Park and Ellenbrook as well as an option to construct a future station at Bennett Springs East.
Designs for the new Malaga station have been released to public this week, following last month’s release of the Ellenbrook station design.
Along with the designs, METRONET is also developing a precinct structure plan for Malaga station, to set the vision and roadmap for the future area around Malaga station for the next 30 years.
Malaga station will provide efficient transport links to Landsdale, Alexander Heights, Ballajura, Malaga and Bennett Springs. Located north-east of the Tonkin Highway and Marshall Road junction, the station will also connect passengers to the Malaga industrial and employment centre.
According to the Western Australian Government, the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook rail line is estimated to take over 10,000 car trips off roads in the north-eastern suburbs each day by 2031.
The main construction work on the project is expected to be concluded in 2023-24.
