The Victorian Government has unveiled the preferred contractors for future works on the Eastern Freeway Upgrades, with two consortia picked for two different project packages.

The Momentum consortium has been selected as the preferred bidder for the upgrades between Hoddle Street and Burke Road. This will include new technology, additional lanes, connections to the Eastern Busway, and new walking and cycling paths including a dedicated bridge over the Yarra River. Momentum comprises John Holland, Seymour Whyte, Jacobs and Mott Macdonald.

The Synergy consortium has been selected as the preferred bidder to complete the Eastern Freeway upgrades between Tram and Springvale roads, including express lanes, smart technology, upgraded noise walls and revitalised sections of the Koonung Creek Linear Park. Synergy comprises CPB Contractors, BMD Constructions and Arup.

The Eastern Freeway will be overhauled all the way from Hoddle Street to Springvale Road, with new express lanes, state-of-the-art traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway from Doncaster toward the city, and will seamlessly connect with the new North East Link tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen.

Construction is already underway on upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road – with the preferred bidders now selected for the remaining stages of the upgrades from Hoddle Street to Burke Road, and from Tram Road to Springvale Road.

Together the three packages of Eastern Freeway works will add more than 45 kilometres of new lanes, with up-to-date technology slashing travel times on the freeway by up to 11 minutes.

This follows the approval of Urban Design and Landscape Plan for the project.

Major Road Projects Victoria will now work with both bidders ahead of contracts being awarded in 2025.
