The Western Australian Government has selected its preferred tenderer to deliver the design and construction of Perth’s new Midland station project.

Midland Junction Alliance, a consortium comprising of McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia and BG&E has been named the preferred proponent for the project, which will see the existing 53-year-old station decommissioned and demolished, replacing it with a new three-platform station to the east of its existing location.

The new station will be located between Helena and Cale streets and will incorporate three platforms catering for up to six-cars, a publicly accessible pedestrian overpass connecting both sides of the railway, a bus interchange and cycling facilities.

A new 12-stand bus interchange and multi-storey car park with more than 600 bays will be constructed at the location of the former Midland Station.

WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said appointing the contractors was a major milestone for the project, which formed a key McGowan Government election commitment.

“Midland is an important retail, commercial and medical hub and this project will allow the station to continue playing a central role connecting visitors with these businesses and services,” she said.

“The new station will bring an economic, social and environmental boost to the Midland city centre, while supporting local jobs during construction.”

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments, with each committing to half of the $165 million estimated project cost.

The project supports Midland’s status as a Strategic Metropolitan Centre and strongly aligns with the program of urban renewal, being led by DevelopmentWA to transform Midland into a contemporary urban centre.

In working with DevelopmentWA, the state government is creating METRONET East, an urban development scheme covering the new Bayswater and High Wycombe stations, as well as the Midland station.

Relocating the station had been discussed for many years with its new location better integrating with the area, bringing it closer to the Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Midland Health Campus.

Once open, the new station is expected to have 3,300 daily boardings, growing to 3,700 in 2031. Passengers will have a 25-minute, two-zone journey to the Perth CBD.

The contract is expected to be awarded to the Midland Junction Alliance later this year, with early works to start this year and an expected completion date of late 2022 or mid-2023.
