Main replacement works on South Australia’s dog-leg intersection between Goodwood, Springbank and Daws road have been completed with the new four-way crossing now open to commuters.

Goodwood Road is a major north to south arterial route in south Adelaide with Springbank and Daws Road both forming important connecting routes to the eastern and western regions of Adelaide.

The $61.4 million project is jointly funded by the Federal and South Australian governments as part of the $4 billion Urban Congestion Fund aimed at reducing congestion in urban areas across Australia.

Paul Fletcher, Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts said, “The Morrison Government is funding these projects nationwide to reduce travel times and vehicle operating costs, deliver a more reliable road network for commuters and freight, and address local bottlenecks.”

According to Corey Wingard, South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the removal of the dog-leg intersection will benefit approximately 60, 000 motorists every day.

“For years this dog leg has been a serious interruption to traffic flow in the southern suburbs and it’s also been dangerous, with 35 crashes over a five-year period, 14 of which resulted in injuries,” said Wingard.

Major construction began in January this year with crews working around the clock over the April 2021 school holidays. The project is currently supporting 48 jobs with work continuing on new kerbing, traffic signal infrastructure, footpaths and street lighting.

“There will still be lane closures and speed restrictions in place while the project is completed so I urge everyone traveling through the area to take care, look out for workers and adhere to any traffic management that is on site,” said Wingard.

According to a statement released by Fletcher, new landscaping will also be part of the upgrade.

Depending on weather, the project is currently due for completion expected in late 2021.
