The Queensland Government has delivered a major boost to Townsville’s transport network by upgrading two critical sections on one of its busiest corridors.
The completion of safety upgrades on Stuart Drive and the duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge has marked a significant milestone for the Townsville Connection Road.
Delivered to minimise disruption and maximise efficiency, the upgrades have transformed the long-standing bottleneck into a safer, higher-capacity connection for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Stuart Drive has specifically been widened from two lanes to four lanes between University Road and the Bowen Road Bridge, with key intersection upgrades improving traffic flow and safety.
Meanwhile, the duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge has doubled river crossing capacity over the Ross River, separating inbound and outbound traffic.
Together, these works now support roughly 24,000 vehicles per day to reduce congestion.
“These projects are part of our plan to build the infrastructure Queenslanders need for a safer, more reliable road network,” said Brent Mickelberg, State Minister for Transport and Main Roads.
“By completing these projects at the same time, we’ve removed a long-standing bottleneck while we’re delivering infrastructure critical for Townsville’s future.”
