Evolution, sustainability and diversity in the industry remain key points of focus in Roads Australia’s (RA) 2022-2024 Strategic Plan.
The rolling three-year document is reviewed annually by RA’s board, and sets out the organisation’s role and core values, and how it intends to keep its activities and policy goals in line with community expectations.
RA President Michael Bushby, speaking at the 2022 Transport Summit in Melbourne yesterday morning, said the organisation needed to be prepared for the changing realities of the era, and the emerging opportunities that presents.
“Disruption is occurring in every conceivable fashion – whether through geopolitical developments, COVID, the influence of technology or rapidly changing community expectations,” Bushby said.
The plan outlines RA’s commitment to three key policy goals, including optimising roads for environmental, social, economic and cultural outcomes; improving safety for road users and workers; and decarbonisation through integrated transport and the efficient use of resources and energy.
Highlighting practical examples of RA’s policy goals in action, Bushby pointed to the forthcoming launch of The Journey to Net-Zero report, which will aim to address climate action in the transport sector, as well as the organisation’s role as a principal partner for National Road Safety Week.
The plan also reinforces RA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the sector, addressing the need to improve industry culture through enhanced engagement and representation of women, support indigenous engagement, maximise social value through education and partnerships, and fostering future leaders in the sector.
“This includes improving the diversity of our industry’s workforce through initiative such as the RA Fellowship and Emerging Leaders Program, and working collaboratively to support other industry efforts that will improve workforce culture, making our sector more attractive to those from diverse backgrounds,” Bushby said.
“These goals reflect the continuing evolution of our industry and this organisation, as we continue to broaden our focus beyond physical road infrastructure and consider how an integrated transport network can align with wider community expectations.”
