SA Gov to run fully electric rail line

SA Gov to run fully electric rail line

The Gawler rail line in South Australia will soon have the capacity to run all electric trains, with the tenth electric train set to be operational from next week, as part of the Gawler Rail Electrification Project.

Testing and commissioning of the tenth train is now complete, with the fully electric machines set to provide cleaner and greener high-performance trains, an improved customer experience with quieter, faster and smoother journeys for passengers, as well as better reliability and safety.

The electric line will also help to decrease noise remove diesel emissions for residents along the rail corridor and passengers at stations, increase energy efficiency through regenerative braking and encourage people to take public transport and leave their cars at home.

The line is also set to receive an additional two trains before the end of the year, bringing the total number of electric trains servicing the line to 12.

These electric trains have been custom fitted to fit the needs of the Adelaide Metro fleet by manufacturer Alstom, who is working to deliver the trains for customer Keolis Downer Adelaide.

Once the final two trains have been delivered, the Adelaide Metro fleet will consist of 34 electric trains in total, servicing the Gawler, Seaford and Flinders lines.

The new trains form part of the Gawler Rail Electrification Project. The first of these units was introduced into service in April 2022.

Minister for infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis said the new trains will help to provide a potentially net-zero public transport option for commuters.

“Electric services not only deliver a better experience for our passengers with efficient, quieter and more comfortable rides, but also supports the State Government to reduce emissions and deliver a greener future,” Koutsantonis said.

“By leaving your car behind and embracing public transport, you’re actively contributing to easing traffic congestion and supporting sustainability – every train trip takes hundreds of cars off our roads.”
