South East Queenslanders have been advised to avoid all non-essential travel today with significant road closures and extremely limited public transport options across the region.
The announcement comes as many major arterial roads, highways and suburban roads remain flooded throughout the region.
There is currently more than 1000 road closures across the state, associated with the severe weather system that emerged over the weekend and continues to lash the state.
The flooding has already claimed seven lives, with major flood and a severe thunderstorm warnings still in place for Brisbane and the Moreton Bay area.
Queensland’s Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said that sections of major highways throughout the region had already been closed.
“We’ve had to close parts of the Gateway Motorway, Ipswich Motorway, Bruce Highway, and dozens of major roads across South East Queensland,” Bailey said.
“The Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Caloundra is expected to be closed for some time and is cut at several points further north between the Sunshine Coast and Maryborough.”
Mr Bailey said there would also be service reductions and cancelations across the train, bus and ferry network on Monday.
“SEQ rail services were suspended from around 1.45pm Sunday and will not be available before mid-morning Monday at the earliest,” he said.
“The impacts of these services reductions will be lessened by region-wide school closures and people being asked to work from home where possible.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said bus services ceased from Sunday at 4pm due to the dangerous weather conditions.
“My message to Brisbane residents is clear: put safety first and stay home as much as possible,” Mr Schrinner said. “This weather event is rapidly changing and if it’s unsafe for our buses and ferry services to operate, then it’s unsafe for cars to be on the road too.”
Services that are currently suspended will be reviewed today. Residents are being urged to check the MyTransLink app for updates.
