Advanced transport modelling has revealed how the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) will cut travel times for passengers and connect two of Australia’s largest universities to train travel.
The SRL Travel Time Savings report was recently released at the SRL Burwood site. Located across the road from Deakin University the Burwood site will give students and staff a direct train service for the first time.
The report outlines a 40-minute time saving for a student from Cheltenham to travel to Deakin University by public transport rather than road, and a nurse living in Burwood can travel to work at Box Hill Hospital in only 3.5 minutes. A student studying in Caulfield will save 17 minutes off a 39-minute journey to Glen Waverley.

Cheltenham to Monash will take just ten minutes door-to-door, compared to about 34 minutes driving, and students from Laverton can travel to Deakin in 60 minutes using SRL, versus up to 79 minutes in a car.
Construction at Burwood is progressing with crews supported by two cranes and an excavator focused on excavation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch site which is now 15 metres deep.
In 2026, two TBMs will be launched from Burwood to dig a tunnel towards Glen Waverley. Another two will later dig the tunnels toward Box Hill.
Harriet Shing, Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop, Housing and Building said the Suburban Rail Loop will change the way that people live, move and work across Melbourne.
“As Melbourne grows, it needs to grow well, and the Suburban Rail Loop will provide thousands of Victorians the same opportunities for home ownership as their parents had, closer to where they grew up,” said Shing.
