Train services have returned to the Sunbury Line following a 10-day construction blitz, as part of the $2.1 billion Sunbury Line Upgrade.

During the closure, crews replaced sections of track along the rail corridor and completed platform extensions at Sunbury Station to accommodate longer trains – the final platform extensions for the Sunbury Line Upgrade.

As part of the upgrade, eight stations along the line have received platform extensions, and eight have received accessibility upgrades with the installation of wheelchair boarding pads.

During the blitz, crews also upgraded signalling and communications equipment from Sunbury to Sunshine, and connected the upgraded Sunbury substation and the new Sydenham Road and St Albans Road substations to the rail corridor.

The power and platform upgrades are expected to increase the reliability and frequency of services, as well as enable bigger, more modern trains to run on the line – allowing for an additional 113,000 passengers every week from 2025 when the Metro Tunnel opens.

Power, track, and platform upgrades for the Sunbury Line Upgrade are being delivered by the Rail Infrastructure Alliance, which consists of John Holland, CPB Contractors, AECOM, Metro Trains Melbourne, and Rail Projects Victoria.
