Planning for the Sydney Metro West project has reached a new phase with Sydney Metro now applying to obtain the Environmental Impact Statement for major civil construction work between The Bays and Sydney CBD.

Sydney Metro West will double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD by adding a new 24-kilometre metro line and nine underground stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and the Sydney CBD.

The Sydney Metro West Concept and major civil construction work for Sydney Metro West between Westmead and The Bays (Stage one of the planning approval for Sydney Metro West) were approved in March 2021. Stage two of the planning approval process includes all major civil construction work including station excavation and tunnelling between The Bays and Sydney CBD.

A Scoping Report lodged with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, is seeking approval for major building works including fit-out of the twin railway tunnels; construction of the new stations and service facilities; building the station precincts; and operating the new underground metro line.

The report provides information on proposed works and outlines the next steps in preparing a detailed Environmental Impact Statement, which will be open for community feedback in early 2022.

The proposal involves works such as demolition, utility supply to construction sites, utility adjustments, and modifications to the existing transport network, tunnel excavation including tunnel support activities and station excavation for new metro stations at Pyrmont and the Sydney CBD.

In 2020, work started on this city shaping project at The Bays to allow tunnel boring machines to be in the ground in 2022. In March 2021, the project received its first major planning approval for the project Concept between Westmead and the Sydney CBD and station excavation and tunnelling between Westmead and The Bays.

Following receipt of the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements, Sydney Metro will prepare and publicly exhibit an Environmental Impact Statement for its proposal.

During public exhibition of the Environmental Impact Statement for this proposal, the community will be encouraged to have their say and make a formal submission.
