The Australian Government has awarded the contract to construct new overtaking lanes on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Proserpine.
Mackay-based company Vassallo Constructions will undertake the $3 million project, which is due to begin in March.
The project is aimed at improving safety and efficiency on the stretch of highway, which carries more than 5000 vehicles a day.
Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said in a statement that the project, which is being delivered a year ahead of schedule, will improve the trip for drivers between Mackay and Proserpine.
“Overtaking lanes are a great way to increase capacity and reduce the risk of head-on collisions and I’m very pleased that works will get underway in coming weeks,” Mr. Christensen said.
“As well as boosting safety, the fact these works are being delivered by a local company will help support jobs in the region and contribute to north Queensland’s economy.
The project is anticipated to be completed in October 2016, weather permitting.
