The tender is out for stage one of the $1.6 billion upgrade to Western Sydney’s The Northern Road.
Assistant Infrastructure Minister Jamie Briggs and NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said construction of the 31 kilometre project is expected to start before the end of the year on stage one between Old Northern Road, Narellan and Peter Brock Drive, Oran Park.
The Northern Road will be upgraded from two lanes to a minimum of four lanes between Narellan and the M4 Motorway, said Mr. Briggs.
“With the $500 million Bringelly Road upgrade now underway, this is another important milestone in our joint $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan which will create thousands of jobs and capitalise on the economic gains from developing an airport at Badgerys Creek,” he said.
Mr. Gay said that The Northern Road will be a vital transport corridor to the South West Growth Centre, which is expected to house around 300,000 residents and create capacity for more than 22,000 jobs.
“The upgrade will transform the current two lane road into a major transport and freight route, cutting travel times and reducing costs for the people and businesses of south west Sydney,” he said
“While tenders are being invited for stage one, detailed design is also under way for stage two between Peter Brock Drive to Mersey Road and planning has started for Stage three and four from Mersey Road to the M4 Motorway,” he added.
