The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have called for tenders for the South of Tunbridge Stage 2 project as part of the $500 million Midland Highway 10-Year Action Plan.
The South of Tunbrudge Stage 2 project will provide an additional south-bound overtaking lane, flexible safety barriers and road curve improvements.
Two additional light vehicle turning bays at the project’s southern end and a combined turning bay and bus stop at Lowes Street will be built.
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said more priority projects will be constructed in the next 12 months, with the overall aim being to bring the full length of the highway up to a minimum AusRAP 3-star safety rating.
“We are working closely with local communities to ensure these projects are delivered as quickly and effectively as possible with minimal disruption to motorists while also maximising local employment opportunities,” he said.
Tenders will close on 16 September, with the successful contractor expected to be announced in early October.
Work on the south of Tunbridge Stage 2 project is scheduled to start in late October 2015, with completion estimated to be mid-2016.
Other Midland Highway projects also scheduled to start this construction season include the Perth to Breadalbane Duplication, Mangalore to Bagdad Stage 1, Kempton to Melton Mowbray and White Lagoon to Mona Vale Road.
