Tunnels linking the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters, which form part of the final components of Transurban’s $16.8 billion WestConnex project in Sydney, have opened to traffic two months ahead of schedule.
The 7.5 kilometre tunnels are expected to save motorists around 40 minutes on a journey between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, by bypassing 52 sets of traffic lights. The link tunnels will accommodate four lanes of traffic in each direction.
The WestConnex is the nation’s largest road infrastructure project – which when complete – will provide a 33-kilometre free motorway network. This will also support connections to future projects linking the north shore and northern beaches, Sydney Airport and the southern suburbs.

The M4 and M8 link is the third stage of the $16.8 billion WestConnex project, which is being delivered in partnership between the New South Wales and Federal governments.
The fourth and final stage of the project will see the New South Wales Government deliver the Rozelle Interchange project, which is also set to open this year.
Sustainable materials and energy efficient technology were used during the construction of the tunnels, which will also provide 23 kilometres of new and improved active transport infrastructure.
