The three companies will now submit a formal bid for the contract, which is expected to be announced in late-2015.

The upgrade of the eight-kilometre section from the Airport to Bulla Road will include new traffic lanes, a freeway management system and improvements to key interchanges including Mickleham Road, Gladstone Park and English Street.

Victorian Minister for Roads, Road Safety and Ports Luke Donnellan said the project will help to relieve congestion for motorists who use the Tullamarine Freeway to travel between the airport and the CBD.

“On average, drivers will save 16 minutes in the morning peak and 17 minutes in the afternoon peak,” he said. “Once complete, the project will reduce congestion and provide road users with a smoother and more reliable journey.”

Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd has already been appointed to construct the Bulla Road to Power Street section of the $1.28 billion project.

Construction is expected to begin in early-2016 with completion anticipated in 2018.
