Two level crossing removals fast tracked for VIC

Level crossings removals at Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Deer Park’s Robinsons Road, west of Melbourne have been fast tracked with construction set to begin in early 2021.

Site investigations and engineering assessments have been performed at these sites for a few months and the Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan has announced they will be the next to go.

The Robinsons Road level crossing will be removed with a road underpass, and the Fitzgerald Road level crossing with a road overpass. Both of the designs will aim to minimise disruptions to train services and the community.

Since 2012 the level crossings have had concerning safety records with 18 near misses. Congestion also causes delays for the 53,000 commuters that use the crossings daily with boom gates down for 45 per cent of the morning peak.

Removal of these two level crossings will set up for the nearby Mount Derrimut Road level crossing to be removed by 2025. This will remove the last of the level crossings between Deer Park and Melbourne CBD.

These level crossing works are also expected to be complimentary to the Western Roads Upgrade.

With designs now confirmed the project team is seeking community feedback on aspects of design and construction. Feedback can be provided through Victoria’s Big Build website.
