Rail Projects Victoria is inviting expressions of interest for delivering two major sections of work for Melbourne Airport Rail project.

The work packages, released to market yesterday, include the Airport Package and the Viaduct Package.

The Melbourne Airport Rail Airport works will primarily comprise of works in and around the Melbourne Airport precinct, including a new station at Melbourne Airport, a new track pair and associated infrastructure, civil works for traction power substation and rail systems; and overhead and line equipment, wiring and structure.

EOI for this package will close at 5pm 17 December 2021.

The Viaduct Package of the Melbourne Airport Rail will deliver a viaduct commencing at Mercer Drive, continuing above the median strip of Airport Drive, towards Steele Creek North, and across the Western Ring Road.

Key scopes of work in the Viaduct package include construction of up to six kilometres of twin track viaduct;
overhead wiring system, wiring and structures; land clearing and civil works for traction power substations and accompanying infrastructure.

EOI for this package will close at 2pm 17 December 2021.

The two new packages are the fourth and fifth of the Melbourne Airport Rail packages to go to the market.

The six major works packages proposed to deliver the project are:

  • Airport Station Package
  • Viaduct Package
  • Corridor Package
  • Maribyrnong River Bridge Package
  • Sunshine to Albion Package, and
  • Rail Systems Package.

The other packages are all in different stages of progress, with the Corridor Package having finished second phase of consultation in September. Contract for the Maribyrnong River Bridge Package is expected to be awarded in 2022. Major works in this package will comprise the delivery of a new elevated twin-track rail crossing to the west of existing Albion Viaduct.

The Sunshine to Albion Package, which comprises works in and around Sunshine and Albion stations is also due for contract award and construction commencement in 2022.

The Melbourne Airport Rail is a proposed rail transit service that will take passengers from Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport to the CBD in less than 30 minutes, using Victoria’s new High Capacity Metro Trains. The project will enable most Victorians to reach Tullamarine with just one interchange, while those in south-east Melbourne will be able to travel directly to the airport.

The Melbourne Airport Rail’s anticipated route will travel through Sunshine in Melbourne’s west and utilise the Metro Tunnel in Melbourne’s CBD.

The Melbourne Airport Rail will be integrated with the Suburban Rail Loop as part of the north-west section of the orbital loop planned for construction around the Melbourne CBD.
