Tyre Stewardship Australia has welcomed an ambitious target set by the Indian government aimed at recovering 100 per cent of end-of-life tyres by 2025.

In an announcement dated 31 December 2021, the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change published a draft of legislation extending producer responsibility regulations for managing the waste tyres.

The extended producer responsibility covers both tyre producers and recyclers of waste tyre. The legislation is due to gradually come into effect in 2022, with full enforcement by 2025.

Lina Goodman, CEO of Tyre Stewardship Australia commented on this recent and important development.

“This step shows encouraging progress in recognising that we are dealing with a global challenge. This development will most likely make it easier for global players to act responsibly and actively avoid many of the environmental and social risks associated with the global collection and trading of end-of-life tyres,” Ms Goodman said.

Tyre Stewardship Australia was established in 2014 to implement the national Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme which aims to promote the development of viable markets for end-of-life (EOL) tyres. Its vision is of a circular economy for EOL tyres which contributes to a sustainable society.

It works to drive sustainable outcomes for EOL tyres in Australia, by:

  • Accrediting participants, including tyre retailers, manufacturers, recyclers and collectors, who are committed to supporting the objectives of the Scheme.
  • Investing in market development initiatives including research and development, and commercialisation, of new productive uses for EOL tyres.
  • Driving the transformation of a waste product into a useful commodity, creating new industries and employment opportunities while also reducing the environmental harm caused by the illegal dumping of old tyres.
