The Victorian Government has created a new Women Building Surveyors Program to create positions as municipal building surveyors at councils.

The $6.3 million program will create 40 new positions and was unveiled by the Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane.

In a partnership with Local Government Professionals (LGPro) the program will provide a way for women to take up jobs to support the building sector.

Each council or a group of councils will be able to put forward a candidate for a place on the program.

Successful applicants will begin the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying or the Bachelor of Building Surveying and get experience at the council.

LGPro will also run professional development opportunities and events alongside the course.

Candidates will start the program in January 2021.

Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane said this is about giving women who are interested in the construction industry an opportunity to develop their careers.

“Greater diversity makes our workplaces stronger and a greater representation of women in construction will benefit everyone in the industry,” he said.

“This program is creating opportunities for women to build a new career while providing an important service for their local council and community.”
