Traffic modelling shows around 3000 fewer trucks will use Millers Road in 2031 if proposed truck tolling points are changed on the upgraded West Gate Freeway, according to the Victorian Government.
As part of the contract, the toll road operator will be required to include only one truck toll point instead of two on the West Gate Freeway, reducing the number of trucks using Millers Road.
The West Gate Tunnel Project will reportedly slash congestion and provide a much-needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge with twin tunnels under Yarraville.
“Melbourne needs the West Gate Tunnel to keep the city moving, said Minister for Roads, Luke Donnellan. “With no alternative, when the West Gate stops, Melbourne stops.”
“The West Gate Tunnel will take more than 9000 trucks off residential streets in the inner west, moving them onto arterial roads and a new, dedicated route to the port,” he said.
In August, the Victorian government announced it would introduce incentives to prevent ‘rat runs’ throughout Melbourne’s Western suburbs.
