Victorian Building Authority appoints new Chief Commissioner

The Victorian Government has appointed Michelle McLean as Chief Commissioner at the Victorian Building Authority, the first woman to hold the role.

McLean is an experienced board director and an expert in finance, governance and people management. She is Deputy Chair of the Country Fire Authority and Chair of its Finance, Audit and Risk Committee, and currently serves as a non-executive Director on the boards of East Gippsland Water and FrontierSI.

Other roles held by McLean include Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer at Cornwall Stodart Lawyers. She is also a member of the Australian Legal Practice Management Association, where she served as president for three years.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne thanked interim Chief Commissioner Justin Madden AM for his leadership of the VBA following the retirement of former Chief Commissioner Dr Owen Donald in January.

“Victoria’s building and plumbing industry is evolving rapidly and Michelle McLean’s experience across the business, finance and government sectors makes her the ideal person to lead the VBA,” Wynne said.

“I thank Justin Madden for his ongoing enthusiasm and years of industry experience, which laid a solid foundation for this transition.”

McLean said she is extremely honoured to be appointed Chief Commissioner of the VBA.

“Construction will play a central role in the economic recovery from coronavirus and the VBA will be there to help keep industry safe.”

The VBA regulates the building and construction industry to keep Victorians safe. Its functions include registering and licensing building practitioners and plumbers, monitoring and enforcing building and plumbing standards, and performing inspections and audits of building and plumbing work across Victoria.
