Perth’s new METRONET Midland Station is officially opening in Western Australia, marking a historic milestone in the transformation of the city’s public transport network.
This new station is located to the east of the old station, and has been designed to reflect the area’s Noongar culture and landscape, as well as its industrial heritage by being set against the backdrop of the Midland Railway Workshops.
The state-of-the-art station is closer to key destinations such as the Midland health Campus and Midland Gate shopping centre.
Key features include a 24/7 pedestrian overpass, new public spaces, a 12-stand bus interchange and a multi-storey carpark.
The new bus interchange, delivered as part of the project, is now fully operational with 12 bus stands, toilets and customer service facilities.
The interchange was built with community designed artwork across the canopy panels, undertaken by local artists in collaboration with local non-profit organisation Indigo Junction.
“This incredible station has brought new vibrancy to the heart of Midland, delivering a better-connected, modern public transport hub to support this growing community,” said Rita Saffioti, WA Transport Minister.
“METRONET has been a game-changer for our city, delivering world-class public transport infrastructure that will service Western Australians for generations to come.”

Works on the new station began in July 2023 and included the relocation of the level crossing from Helena Street to Cale Street, along with the demolition of the previous 57-year-old station.
The opening of the new Midland Station also marks the completion of the twenty-third METRONET station, as part of the State Government’s vision to expand and revitalise WA’s public transport network.
METRONET has so far delivered 23 new stations, 72 kilometres of new rail and removed 15 level crossings, unlocking thousands of hectares of land for housing, local businesses and community activation.
“The opening of the new Midland Station marks the final commitment delivered under WA Labor’s 2017 METRONET vision,” said Roger Cook, WA Premier.
“My government is committed to delivering quality infrastructure all over Western Australia, to support a high quality of life no matter where they live through METRONET and world-class public transport.”
Regular passenger services will run from Midland Station tomorrow, with trains operating every 12 minutes during peak and every 15 minutes off peak.
Passengers will pay no more than $2.80 using a SmartRider with Autoload or $3.50 using contactless payments to travel anywhere on the network with the Cook Government’s new Go Anywhere Fare.
More than 250 local jobs were supported during the project, with 16 Aboriginal businesses awarded contracts of more than $50,000 to deliver the works.
The new METRONET Midland Station Project has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star Design rating by the Green Building Council of Australia – the highest possible rating, recognised internationally as demonstrating ‘World Leadership’ in sustainability.
