The Victorian Government has released the development plan for the Fitzroy Gasworks site transformation and is seeking community feedback on the proposed plans to convert the site into a new residential precinct.
The former Fitzroy Gasworks site at Fitzroy North will be turned into a new precinct, with up to 20 per cent in affordable housing options, close to public transport.
Works will include building 1100 apartments, a 650-student senior high school, a multi-use sports centre, a community facility, underground car parking, options for bicycle parking and open space.
The apartments will be developed with a strong focus on energy and water conservation, as well as waste management and transport solutions.
Around 200 will be Affordable Build to Rent (ABTR), to provide high quality housing that will remain available as a rental for the long term.
Construction will also include a multi-use sports centre built over two levels, with four indoor sports courts and a new gym, which will be accessed by sporting clubs and the local community.
Construction of the multi-use sports centre is scheduled to begin mid-next year, with the process to secure a contractor already underway.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the project would deliver affordable housing, open space and a high school close to public transport.
“The Fitzroy Gasworks site will ensure more Victorians have a great place to call home and also create hundreds of local jobs,” Allan said.
The projects development plan is based on both community and stakeholder consultation and outlines the planning controls, policies and principles that will guide the design and construction of the site.
The development plan is open for community feedback over the next four weeks. Following submissions, the finalised plan will then be submitted for approval to begin the redevelopment of the site.
