Construction works have commenced on a $270 million fuel storage facility at East Arm in the Northern Territory.

The Crowley Bulk Fuel Storage Facility will be the largest of its kind in the Territory, and it is being built at Land Development Corporation’s future Bulk Liquids Area.

Construction on all 11 tanks has begun, following the pouring of the final ringbeam last month.

The project is being delivered by Crowley, Saunders International, and Tetra Tech Proteus. It has created around 200 jobs in its construction phase, and will support up to an additional 10 employees once operational.

The facility, once completed, will hold up to 300 million litres of military specification fuel, playing a pivotal role in servicing U.S. defence operations in the region.

Nicole Manison, Deputy Chief Minister, said: “This is an important project that not only supports critical defence work, but also supports local jobs and businesses.

“It will strengthen the Territory as a leading hub for defence and national security, because of our strategic location and capabilities.”

Sean Thomas, Crowley Government Services Vice President, said his team was honoured to add value to the fabric of the Northern Territory.

“The dedicated efforts of the entire Crowley team, including our project partners as well as our myriad stakeholders across Australia and the Pacific Region, is the key to the successful advancement of this strategic capability,” he said.

Construction is due for completion in September 2023, with the facility to be operational soon afterwards.
