Construction has commenced on a new replacement bridge for Rainbow Creek, which flows through Cowwarr and Heyfield in regional Victoria.
The current timber Rainbow Creek Bridge, situated on Traralgon-Maffra Road, was built in 1947. The replacement will feature a brand new reinforced concrete bridge.
Additional works will take place, including realignments for both approaches to the bridge, new road and pavement on approaches to the bridge, the installation of safety barriers on either side of the new bridge, as well as further upgrades to road surfaces and line marking.
It’s expected that such works will help to increase the safety and reliability of the connection, as well as help to reduce long-term costs required for maintenance.

The current bridge will remain open as works are delivered. Lane closures will take place to enable the delivery of realignments on either side. Short periods of full closures will take place to support delivery of specific activities at night.
Traralgon-Maffra Road currently carries about 3000 vehicles daily. It is also a vital route for agriculture, supporting the Macalister Irrigation District, one of Victoria’s key food production regions.
The Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation were consulted for advice relating to Aboriginal heritage in the area as part of the preparation of a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
Construction is expected to be completed later this year.
This project is being jointly funded by the Federal and Victorian governments.
